Metadata: 2001-2002, Environmentally Sustainable Systems (ESS), Kentish Flats, Ornithologial Assessment
Abstract:
An ornithological assessment for the proposed Kentish Flats offshore wind farm has been undertaken by Environmentally Sustainable Systems on behalf of GREP UK Marine Ltd. The work assesses the number and distribution of birds present in the proposed wind farm area during seven months of the year, from October 2001 to April 2002, and assesses the risks and likely effects of disturbance and potential collisions with turbines upon bird populations caused by the construction of a wind farm at Kentish Flats.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Field methods used are based on the chapter “Counting Birds from Ships” (Komdeur et al 1992) by Andy Webb of the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC). These have been refined to be more accurate and repeatable in consultation with Andy Webb and Professor Bob Furness, who leads Glasgow University’s Seabird Research Group and has advised the Danish Ministry of Energy and Environment on their offshore windfarm monitoring programmes. Advice on aerial surveys has been taken from Peter Cranswick of the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust (WWT). It was originally agreed with the environmental bodies consulted above not to employ aerial surveys on this site, since there is insufficient evidence of large seaduck (i.e. flocks of greater than 300 birds) concentrations in the vicinity of the wind farm area to justify aerial surveys. Furthermore, if such surveys were undertaken, they would not be repeatable if the wind farm is built due to the uninsurable risks of flying very close to wind turbines. However, the advice from English Nature, that aerial surveys would not be required, was amended in April 2002, with a request from EN that some aerial data be incorporated into this study. Therefore data collected by Andy Webb and his JNCC colleagues in January 2002 have been mapped and included in this report. It is hoped that data from one further aerial survey, which has been scheduled for August 2002, will be mapped and reviewed in the Technical Addendum to be distributed in late-November 2002. Because the primary reason for English Nature revising their advice is the possibility of large nationally important numbers of seaducks using the wind farm site, earlier aerial survey data on seaducks using the surrounding area are also mapped and discussed in 5.4.4. Note that these aerial surveys are primarily required to survey seaduck populations, and as such only these species are mapped and discussed from the 1989 aerial survey data. Prior to the start of the survey work, the proposed field methodologies were supplied by email to EN, the RSPB, KOS and the KWT, and at two consultation meetings held on October 3rd and December 13th 2001. |
