Metadata: 2011, RPS/Titan, Gunfleet Sands 3, Pre-Construction Sub-tidal Benthic Monitoring
Abstract:
RPS Planning and Development were commissioned by DONG Energy Power (UK) Ltd. to undertake an assessment of the subtidal benthic ecology in the vicinity of the proposed Gunfleet Sands 3 (GFS 3) export cable route. The assessment included geophysical and environmental sampling of the GFS 3 export cable route, as well as a comparison with historic data collected in the vicinity of the proposed development in order to characterise the benthic ecology of the cable route. The 2002 GFS 1 environmental survey, along with the 2007 GFS 2 pre-construction and 2010 GFS 2 post construction surveys of benthic communities, provided a characterisation of the seabed surface sediments present within the GFS 1 and 2 survey areas, which included the proposed GFS 3 export cable route. Titan Environmental Surveys Limited was commissioned by Gardline Geosurvey Ltd (hereafter referred to as Gardline) on behalf of Dong Energy to conduct a preliminary geophysical investigation of the GFS 3 export cable route. The survey was carried out onboard the MV Titan Endeavour between the 20th and 27th June 2011. A benthic survey in order to ground truth the geophysical data was carried out onboard the Arie Dirk between the 9th and 10th July 2011. Benthic subtidal sediments within the study area were characterised by three broad sediment types: sand and muddy sand sediments dominated the Gunfleet Sands sandbank, coarse sediments were noted on the northern flank of the sandbank and mixed sediments along the northern extent of the export cable route. All data and reports from the geophysical survey can be found in this separate series: "2011, Gardline, Gunfleet Sands 3, Export Cable Survey"
