Metadata: 2018, Ørsted, Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm, Y0 Sandeel Monitoring
Abstract:
Race Bank Wind Farm Limited agreed with the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) and its advisers that all reference to fish monitoring be removed from the Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm (the ‘Project’) Marine Licence (L/2012/00217 (as amended)) with the exception of sandeels for which monitoring will be provided for under the Project’s Ornithological Monitoring Plan (OMP). In order to identify any changes in sandeel habitat, it is necessary to first establish the current habitat baseline. This report uses sediment data from the Project’s pre-construction benthic baseline survey along with acoustic seabed images, to identify those areas of the Project site and wider area that represent suitable habitat for sandeel.

| Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. |
| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | To allow for direct comparisons with the pre-construction baseline outputs, the same methodology was used to analyse the Year 1 post-construction sediment data, which was collected from 147 locations and categorised according to its suitability as sandeel habitat (Figure 2.1). As described in Greenstreet et al. (2010), as the percentage of fine sand, coarse silt, medium silt, and fine silt (particles less than 0.25 mm in diameter) increases, sandeel increasingly avoid the habitat. Conversely, as the percentage of coarse and medium sand (particles ranging from 0.25 to less than 2.0 mm) increases, sandeel demonstrate an increased preference for the habitat. Greenstreet et al. (2010) subsequently defined four distinct sandeel sediment preferences: Unsuitable, Suitable, Sub-Prime and Prime. Particle size data from the Year 1 post-construction monitoring survey (Ocean Ecology Ltd, 2018a and 2018b) were analysed following the methods of Greenstreet et al. (2010). The amount of silts and fines sands and coarse sands as a percentage of total sediment was used to allocate each sample location into four sandeel sediment preference categories (Figure 2.2). It should be noted that silts and fines sands are defined as those sediments passing through a 0.25 mm sieve, and â??coarse sandsâ?? as those retained on a 0.25 mm sieve but passing through a 2 mm sieve (thereby including medium sands and very coarse sands as well as coarse sands according to the Wentworth scale (Wentworth, 1922)). Although assessing sandeel habitats can be used as a proxy for sandeel abundance, as the Year 1 post-construction survey (Ocean Ecology Ltd, 2018a and 2018b) included faunal analysis and the faunal data set was checked for the presence of Ammodytes tobianus (lesser sandeel) and Hyperoplus lanceolatus (greater sandeel). Summary results are shown in Appendix A, where percentage mud, sand and gravel are also shown, along with summary sediment statistics based on the Folk and Ward method detailed by Ocean Ecology (2018a and 2018b). Full sediment analysis is presented in the Year 1 post-construction benthic monitoring report (Ocean Ecology, 2018a, 2018b) |
