Metadata: 2011-2012, EGS (International) UK, Blyth NaREC Demonstration Offshore Site, Geophysical Survey
Abstract:
EGS (International) Ltd was contracted by NaREC Ltd to undertake a geophysical survey for the NaREC Offshore Wind Farm Demonstration Site off the coast of Blyth, Northumberland. The marine survey was designed to investigate the seabed morphology, shallow geology and any potential geo-hazards or environmental constraints to the development of the demonstration site. Surveys took place from August to September 2011.
Data holder:
National Renewable Energy Centre Ltd.

| Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey requirements were to: ? Achieve full and continuous (100%) coverage of the seafloor with the MBES to IHO S44 Standard Order 1a (minimum of 10-15% data overlap). ? Achieve full and continuous coverage of the seafloor with a 100% overlap of the SSS data within the Geophysical survey areas. No overlap was required within the Environmental area. ? Identify the sub-bottom geology with a focus on the upper 10-15 m below the seabed; inside the Geophysical survey area only. ? Identify the location, extent and nature of any impediments to the installation of Wind Farm turbines and the related export cables, such as wrecks, debris, rock outcrops and cables/pipelines etc, inside the Geophysical survey area only. It should be noted that detailed specifications for the detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO) were not included in the scope of this work.d. The spread of Geophysical instrumentation constituted a Sub-Bottom Profiler (SBP), a Side-Scan Sonar (SSS) and a Magnetometer (MAG). Bathymetric survey data were collected using a Multi-Beam Echo-sounder (MBES) and conform to the International Hydrographic Office (IHO) S-44 Order 1a survey standard. In general, all the recorded data was considered to be of good quality throughout the survey, with reruns and infills conducted as necessary. The seabed mapping systems used (MBES and SSS) made it possible to obtain a detailed definition of the morphology and texture of the seabed surface, and the sub-bottom profiling system has allowed the Quaternary sequence to be marked down to the underlying bedrock. It needs to be highlighted that the magnetometer survey should be considered of a ‘reconnaissance’ nature due to the spacing of the survey lines |
