Fishermen that normally switch from netting in the western channel to netting in the southern north sea in early spring, wanted to explore the viability of wreck netting for pollack within the channel. The fishermen theorised using a large mesh net in the channel, would be a feasible alternative to fishing the North Sea, were the minimising of the bycatch of cod is a problem. From late February through to mid March 2012, 100 hauls were observed by Cefas scientists. Catch varied from one wreck to the next. But overall the Jubilee Pride successfully demonstrated the feasibility of conducting a targeted fishery for pollack. Catches were dominated by pollack and bib. Pollack accounted for nearly 90% of the total landed weight of fish. Bib on the other hand was mostly discarded, accounting for just 0.7% of the total landed weight of fish. After pollack, the next biggest landing was ling accounting for 6% of the total landed weight of fish. The contribution of cod to the total landed weight of fish was just over 1% (just 20 individuals taken throughout the survey). The bycatch of sensitive species such as marine mammals and sharks was minimal, with no mammals caught and just a few tope and spurdog. Built in 1979 in Denmark, this 18 metre, 47 tonne wooden hulled gill-netter (formally the FV Biscayen) was recently acquired by Jubilee Fishing and extensively updated prior to the survey commencing.**The Gear**The gillnets used in the survey were of monofilament construction. The mesh size was 150 mm and the twine had a diameter of 0.57 mm. The nets were measured at 66 m long on the headrope, with a footrope length of 72 m and a depth of 24.5 meshes. Floats were attached every 3 m. All nets were rigged in the “Danish” style.**Sampling Plan**Fishing took place on wrecks >12 miles offshore in the Channel (the western side of ICES VIId and the eastern side of VIIe) within UK fishery limits. For the purposes of the survey, the 1°W longitude line was the eastern limit of the survey area. The survey began in late February 2012. The duration of the survey was two periods of seven continuous days, taking place over successive neap tides.Where possible, the on board fisheries observer measured all the fish in both the retained and discarded portion of the catch. Occasionally the volume of catch would be such that the observer would only be able to measure a sample of the total catch. By recording the volume of the sample and noting the volume of the total portion (ie retained or discarded) it is possible to "raise" the numbers and length distributions of the fish sample up to that of the total catch.
