A maerl bed (Priority Marine Feature) was surveyed using diver cores along a single 25m transect. Four diver core samples were collected in total for particle size analysis (PSA) and infaunal identification. Four core samples were collected from a single sampling station at this maerl site between the 21st July and 6th August 2016. Each sample was taken using a 10.3 cm diameter core, collected haphazardly along a 25m transect (station). The 4 cores were analysed separately (not pooled) representing replicates from a single transect 'sample'. Each infaunal sample was passed through a 1mm mesh sieve, and sieve residue was retained and fixed using buffered formalin. A single PSA sample was also collected at the station and stored frozen for subsequent analysis. Laboratory processing of the core samples for species identification was undertaken by experienced staff members and taxonomists at Precision Marine Survey Limited, following the NMBAQC scheme. Measurements (max length) of a maximum of 50 live maerl fragments were also undertaken from a subsample of the four homogenized core samples. PSA analysis was carried out by a combination of dry sieving and laser particle size analysis, following the latest NMBAQC guidance. Prior to PSA analysis, photographs were taken of all samples.
