<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The databank comprises more than 50,000 profiles of conductivity-temperature-depth (CTD) or salinity-temperature-depth (STD) profiles collected during 100s of research cruises by UK laboratories, since 1969. The majority of profiles were collected in the North East Atlantic but data are available from elsewhere including for example the Indian Ocean, the South Atlantic and the Southern Ocean. Many profiles have been measured in shelf seas (often around the UK) but some are deep ocean profiles which may contain data to a depth of 5000m. Data are normally supplied to the British Oceanographic Data Centre as time or depth averages resulting in vertical resolutions between 0.5 dbar and 10 dbar, with casts collected in shallow water typically having a higher vertical resolution.</dc:description>
