<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">In 2015 Skomer Marine Nature Reserve changed designation to Skomer Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). Skomer Marine Nature Reserve (MNR) was designated in 1990. The scallop population in the Reserve is of conservation value because of its small size and its remoteness from any substantial population. Scallops were collected commercially and recreationally in the area of the Reserve until 1990. In 1990 the South Wales Sea Fisheries Committee (SWSFC) introduced a byelaw prohibiting scallop collecting by any means. The population of scallops needs to be monitored in order to assess the effectiveness of this byelaw. Surveys have been carried out since 1979 looking at scallop density and size. The purpose of this data capture was to estimate the density of scallops within suitable habitats in the Reserve and to assess the age structure in the population.</dc:description>
