<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">This is a GIS dataset containing Phase 1 level intertidal species index (point data). The intertidal habitat mapping began in 1996 and was completed in 2005. All work has been undertaken by Countryside Council for Wales' (CCW's) in house intertidal survey team.

During the survey species were recorded in one of three ways:
1) in target notes,
 2) in species lists for certain (mainly specialised and nationally important) biotopes found on a site, or
3) in species list for a whole site therefore precision is very variable.

Surveys were undertaken to provide an assessment of sites as possible Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's) and as a basis for developing sensitivity mapping. They are also used in the production and evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's) and as an integrated information resource for local authorities' structure and development plans on the coast and for the consideration of planning applications.</dc:description>
