<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The Natural History Museum was asked by the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) to undertake a survey of all potential lagoonal or coastal brackish pond sites in Wales. This dataset presents the results of that survey, conducted during December 1998 as well as the results of the review and proposals for the monitoring and conservation of the coastal saline lagoons in Wales. Lagoons are an unusual and rare habitat, both in the UK (total resource ca 5,000 ha) and elsewhere. The characteristic lagoon community includes species almost or entirely restricted to lagoonal habitats in the United Kingdom, where they represent some of our rarest plants and animals; nine lagoonal species are currently protected under Schedules 5 and 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981). Survey of lagoonal habitats in Wales to identify lagoons and pools and carry out an assessment of condition and monitoring.</dc:description>
