<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">In March 1996 the Sea Empress Environmental Evaluation Committee (SEEEC) was set up by the government to assess the impact of the Sea Empress oil spill on the environment. This contract was issued as part of the SEEEC monitoring programme designed to evaluate the impact of oil from the Sea Empress on local marine life.

Data collected in order to ascertain whether Paludinella littorina still lived at its known sites at Broad Haven and on Caldey Island after the Sea Empress oil spill and to obtain more information on the extent and density of the populations. The objectives were to:

1. Ascertain whether Paludinella littorina is still living at its known sites at Broad Haven and on Caldey Island and to obtain more information on the extent and density of the populations.
2. Attempt an assessment of the impact of oil damage, if any and subsequent recovery, to habitats at known Paludinella littorina sites.
3. Locate and investigate other sites for Paludinella littorina on Caldey Island.
4. Evaluate methods for monitoring and recommend a protocol for future monitoring work.</dc:description>
