<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The large breeding colonies of grey seals in northern Britain have been censused annually in recent years by the Sea Mammal Research Unit, but the relatively small population in Wales had not been the subject of a population estimate since 1974 and there had never been a comprehensive census of all mainland and island sites sustained through a pupping season. The purpose of this data capture was to locate and document all grey seal breeding sites during the main pupping season from September to December 1991 and to estimate pup production at these sites. To estimate the total number of cows in the West Wales population, identify 'areas' where seals are subject to disturbance by man and assess the quality of the breeding haul-out environment.</dc:description>
