<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The Habitats Directive establishes that the management of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) should aim to achieve the favourable conservation status of habitat and species features listed within its Annex I and Annex II. For SACs in Wales, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) was therefore required to report on a regular basis on whether features are in favourable conservation status.

Between 1999 and 2001, the Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) undertook a Phase 1 biotope mapping survey of the intertidal areas of the Carmarthen Bay and Estuaries Special Area of Conservation (SAC).

This dataset includes the results of surveys of the biotopes present along eight transects around Carmarthen Bay. Thirteen transects had been surveyed with a very similar methodology in 2005. This survey repeated one of those transects and established seven new transects. The purpose of this data capture was to provide sufficient information to identify the biotopes present and describe the composition of the communities; and to establish sites for long-term monitoring and collect baseline/reference data using appropriate methods.</dc:description>
