<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The Water Environment (Water Framework Directive) (England and Wales) Regulations 2017 (WFD Regulations 2017) requires specification of protected areas for those areas designated as nutrient sensitive areas.

UWWTR Sensitive Areas Shellfish Waters layer has been renamed from the UWWTD Sensitive Areas Shellfish Waters and updated to only show areas which are designated as Shellfish Waters under the WFD Regulations following Welsh Government review.

This is a spatial dataset showing the extent of the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive (UWWTD) sensitive areas (Shellfish Water) in Wales.

The Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) (91/271/EEC) is designed to reduce the pollution of freshwater, estuarine and coastal waters by domestic sewage and industrial wastewater collectively known as urban waste water. These water have been identified as a sensitive because further treatment than secondary or equivalent treatment is necessary to meet other EC Directives such as the Water Framework Directive.</dc:description>
