<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The Zostera beds in the South Walney Channel and adjacent area are the only seagrass beds in Northwestern England.
The present survey showed Zostera to occur widely between the north (Barrow) side of Roosecote Bay and Foulney Island, sporadically on Rampside Sands and on Walney Island at Wylock Marsh.
Two species of Zostera were recorded in the present survey (Z. angustifolia, Z. noltii).
Current mapped distribution of Zostera is compared with CASI images showing occurrence of vegetation over intertidal areas.
The possible effects of changes in coastal configuration and incursion of Spartina anglica on Zostera in the South Walney Channel area are discussed.
Suggestions are made for further surveillance and other studies.</dc:description>
