<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">Survey and excavation of the wreck of a slate-cargo ship found in the Pwll Fanog area of the Menai Strait in July 1976. This record incorporates the September 1977 pre-disturbance survey which revealed a cargo of slates with a date range of some 800 years, the 1978 survey and excavation which revealed the well preserved timbers of the wreck beneath the slate cargo, and the 1979 lifting of a small part of the keel which had broken away from a larger section exposed in 1978. The keel type was attributed to the 1100s. Radiocarbon dating of one of the ship's timbers suggested a date of loss some time in the second half of the 16th century. The site is designated as a Historic Wreck under the Protection of Wrecks Act (1973). As such, diving on, or any other interferance with the wreck including filming, survey and excavation is a criminal offense unless a license has first been obtained.</dc:description>
