<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">This collection comprises images from an examination and photographic survey of the Hendon Foreshore Barrier, Port of Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. This work was undertaken by Archaeological Services Durham University in January 2023. The damaged Hendon Foreshore Barrier was created as part of the original construction of the adjoining Hendon Dock, between 1864 and 1868. The structure of the sea wall is a braced timber frame with wooden facing filled with other materials. The original structure has been repaired on many occasions but much of what stands today is original fabric. According to the proposal drawings the old timber, stone and concrete sea wall will remain in place under a new and stronger concrete casing.</dc:description>
