  <dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The winter nutrient programme is an ongoing annual survey assessing nutrient levels in marine water systems. Data gathered is based on laboratory analysis of spot water samples taken during the winter period (Nov-Feb). The frequencies are determined by the directives, Water Framework Directive (WFD), Nitrates Directive, Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive (UWWTD) and Programme for Government (PFG). Samples from Clean Seas Evidence Group (CSEG) are submitted to Marine Environment Monitoring and Assessment National database (MERMAN) annually. The data held in MERMAN fulfils the UK's mandatory monitoring requirements under the Oslo and Paris Convention (OSPAR), Joint Assessments and Monitoring Programme (JAMP). 
 The annual winter nutrient survey is a sub-project with the DAERA Water Framework Directive Combined Water Sampling Project (MMYY-10). Other related surveys within this project include the monitoring of WFD Annex VIII and X pollutants, and Clean Seas Evidence Group (CSEG) monitoring at fixed stations within 6 transitional and coastal water bodies.
