<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">As part of the Southern IFCA’s Fish Monitoring Programme, this dataset was collected for the purposes of informing the understanding of juvenile fish population, diversity and species richness within specific areas of the District, including those managed as Essential Fish Habitats, to inform fisheries management. Samples were taken using a beach seine net method, deployed either by hand or using a vessel with a minimum of 2 net hauls completed at each sampling site. Sampling sites have varied over the duration of the dataset, the current methodology covers 4 sites. The samples will be taken at slack water within approximately 30 minutes either side of high or low water. Each individual fish caught will be identified to species level to the best of the surveyor’s ability. The first 50 individuals of each species will have their total body length measured to the nearest millimetre. Personnel should select these 50 fish at random to avoid any inadvertent bias towards larger fish. Any remaining individuals from each species after the first 50 will be counted. Each species new to the survey will be photographed, and any individuals that prove difficult to identify will also be photographed, to allow further attempts at identification after fieldwork has been completed.</dc:description>
