<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">London Array Limited (LAL) applied for consent under Section 36 of the Electricity Act (1989) to construct and operate a 1000MW Offshore Wind Farm “London Array” (LAOWF) in 2006. The FEPA Licence 32945/07/1 was originally issued in December 2006. This has since been revised and a new Marine Licence (L/2011/00152/23) was issued in May 2012. The Marine Licence limits development to an initial phase of up to a maximum of 175 turbines, which stems from the Section 36 consent that limits the first phase to 630MW capacity, covering an area of approximately 100km2. The remainder of the capacity may be installed once the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) are satisfied that doing so will not adversely affect the integrity of the Outer Thames Estuary Special Protection Area (SPA). LAL is undertaking additional monitoring of wintering red-throated diver, a designated feature of the SPA, to inform that process. Requirements for pre-, during- and post-construction monitoring are also detailed in the Marine Licence.

Phase 1 offshore construction of LAOWF began in March 2011 and the first of 175 turbines was installed in January 2012. The final turbine was installed in December 2012 and Phase 1 of the project was fully operational by spring 2013. The final construction work on the LAOWF associated inter-tidal cable was completed at the end of September 2013. LAL is required to carry out a number of environmental surveys during the construction period and beyond, to establish whether the predictions made in the Environmental Statement can be confirmed.</dc:description>
