<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The GeoData Institute at Southampton University conducted a socio-economic study in July 2002, commissioned by Emu Ltd on behalf of GREP and the Canterbury City District Council, to assess the potential impacts of the proposed Kentish Flats Offshore Wind Farm on Canterbury District and the wider East Kent Triangle.

The study found that the region faces socio-economic challenges, including high unemployment and limited business formation, but the wind farm is expected to provide modest employment and income benefits, especially in high-unemployment areas, and align with government goals for emissions reduction and sustainable development. While minimal disruption to tourism and landscape is anticipated, concerns from fishermen and recommendations for bird protection were noted. Key recommendations include leveraging local assets and expertise, improving transport infrastructure, accurately valuing non-marketed socio-economic impacts, maximizing local economic involvement, and supporting vulnerable social groups to enhance regeneration and create sustained socio-economic gains from renewable energy infrastructure.</dc:description>
