<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">This project summarises the findings of the winter 2010 / 11 and 2011 / 12 aerial surveys of the London Array Ltd Offshore Wind Farm (OWF) site, and associated control zone, for birds and marine mammals. The study assessed abundance, distribution, and seasonal variations of seabirds including red-throated divers, gulls, auks, and other species, as well as marine mammals, across Zones 1 and 2.

Key findings revealed significant year-to-year fluctuations, with a decline in diver and gull numbers in 2011/12 and shifts in peak counts for other seabird and marine mammal taxa, strongly influenced by tidal state, habitat features, and environmental factors. Diver populations were concentrated in shallow waters and exceeded regional expectations, underscoring the area’s importance for conservation.

Results informed Marine Licence requirements and potential designation of the Outer Thames Estuary as a Special Protection Area. The study concluded that ongoing, targeted monitoring is essential for assessing environmental and construction impacts, supporting adaptive management, and guiding mitigation strategies.</dc:description>
