  <dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">Highland Statistics Ltd. conducted a power analysis in 2003 on sea bird data collected near the North Hoyle wind farm to assess the effectiveness of the survey design in detecting population changes in selected species before and after wind farm construction. The study used bird counts and presence-absence data from nine observation sessions in late 2001 and early 2002, analyzing sightings by spatial distance bands with georeferenced records and employing statistical power analysis as outlined by Zar (1999) and comparative methodological tables. 

The analysis showed that only for cormorant, guillemot, kittiwake, and shag species&#x2014;where observed means exceeded the effect size&#x2014;could significant reductions be reliably detected with the available sample size and typical statistical thresholds, while most other species&#x2019; data lacked adequate power to reveal plausible effects. The study recommends substantially increased survey effort or alternative designs to improve detectability for less abundant species and emphasizes focusing monitoring on species and metrics where sufficient power can be achieved.</dc:description>
