<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">RPS Energy contracted WWT Consulting to provide weekly counts of peak numbers of Pink-footed Geese, Anser brachyrhynchus, and Whooper Swans, Cygnus cygnus, on the WWT Martin Mere reserve in Lancashire. Counts were to take place from the week commencing 6th September to the week commencing 27th December, 2009. This series contains the Final Report and landing count data.

The survey found peak numbers of 26,500 Pink-footed Geese (31 October) and 1,580 Whooper Swans (20 December), with both species showing patterns consistent with previous years despite annual fluctuations; the local wintering goose population was estimated to exceed 35,000. Data from Martin Mere reflected broader population stability for geese and a possible increase in England’s wintering Whooper Swan population, although the single-site findings may not capture wider trends due to birds using multiple locations. The report recommends consideration of weather constraints in future monitoring and notes the ongoing increase in the Whooper Swan population at the national level.</dc:description>
