<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">From 2002 to 2007, WWT Consulting and Rudall Blanchard Associates conducted a comprehensive study on the wintering populations, migration patterns, and habitat use of Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swans at Martin Mere, Lancashire, primarily to inform a Food and Environment Protection Act application for an offshore windfarm. Combining electronically collected weekly and monthly bird counts, literature review, ringing recoveries, colour-marking studies, satellite telemetry, and faecal analyses, the study found significant and sustained increases in both species at Martin Mere, linked to agricultural changes, habitat management, and supplemental feeding.

The research highlighted shifts in migration timing, strong site fidelity, and correlations with declines at other sites, underlining Martin Mere’s conservation importance. The key takeaway is that habitat management and feeding practices are major factors influencing species distribution, and ongoing coordinated monitoring, adaptive management, and conservation planning are recommended to support these wintering populations; however, the conclusions are primarily based on data from Martin Mere and should guide—but not solely determine—management decisions.</dc:description>
