<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The Pollution Risk Offshore Technical Evaluation System (PROTEUS) has been developed by BMT to predict the fate and impact of discharged drilling mud, cuttings and produced waters in the marine environment. Environmental Statement Appendix 16.

The study used a discrete particle-tracking model (PROTEUS) that incorporated hydrodynamic data, observed particle behaviour, and empirical acceleration factors, together with established equations and random walk algorithms for simulating turbulent diffusion. The methodology included modelling based on particle size distributions and settling velocities derived from North Sea project data and laboratory-derived equations, and using parameters measured from the Ormonde North and South discharge locations. Results showed that drilling muds and cuttings with thicknesses above 0.5 mm were deposited over circular areas roughly 245 metres in diameter at Ormonde South and 225 metres at Ormonde North, with maximum deposit thicknesses of 6 mm and 7 mm, respectively, at the centres. The study concluded that the PROTEUS model reliably predicts the spatial extent and deposition characteristics of drilling discharges, and recommended its continued application for environmental impact assessments of seabed discharges.</dc:description>
