<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">In Spring 2002, Titan Environmental Surveys Limited was commissioned to undertake a macrobenthic survey on Gunfleet Sands off the Essex coast, to support the design and development of the proposed offshore wind farm at Gunfleet Sands. The scope of the survey included benthic sampling at 65 sites in the study area, incorporating day grab sampling and retention of benthic fauna on 1.0mm and 0.5mm sieves, followed by preservation in formaldehyde solution, sampling of the sediment for particle size analysis, metals and hydrocarbon compounds, trawl samples from seven tows within the study area and appropriate analysis and processing of the samples. The survey commenced on the 14th February 2002, grab sampling and trawling was completed by 18th February 2002. The outcome of the survey showed that the majority of the sampling sites within the proposed windfarm development and along the Gunfleet Sands, on Buxey Sands and Foulness Sands were composed predominantly of fine sands or very fine sands. Most were at least moderately well sorted, and some had sufficient silt and clay or coarser material to be designated muddy or gravelly. Those samples that were analysed for metals and hydrocarbons contained concentrations well within, or close to, the ranges expected for uncontaminated sediments.</dc:description>
