  <dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The objectives of this study were to deliver a safe and robust method for the sampling of the mixture overflowing from the hopper of a vessel typical of the UK aggregate dredging fleet. The main element of this study being the deployment of the instrument array in the field on board a working aggregate dredger under a range of operational conditions and site characteristics in order to provide an extended measurement database. Silt concentrations were successfully measured through the deployment of optical transmission and back scatter sensors in the hopper.</dc:description>
