<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The need for information on ambient noise levels within the Moray Firth SAC was recognized at a joint meeting between BOWL and MORL consenting teams and their advisors on 16th Dec 2011. Therefore, it was agreed that additional data gathering would be beneficial to provide additional context information on the potential effects of piling noise on bottlenose dolphins.

As a result, MORL and BOWL agreed to jointly fund the collection of acoustic data in summer 2012, to provide information on background noise levels in two areas frequented by bottlenose dolphins; the Chanonry narrows and the Sutors of Cromarty. Full spectrum noise recordings (2Hz – 192kHz) were made using Wildlife Acoustics SM2M Ultrasonic Recorders. Collection and initial processing of the acoustic data were conducted at the Lighthouse Field Station. In addition, Subacoustech were contracted to provide analysis of the acoustic data to provide dBht measurements that were weighted according to the audiograms of harbour seals, harbour porpoise, bottlenose dolphin and salmon.</dc:description>
