The Institute of Estuarine and Coastal Studies (IECS) have carried out a number of benthic surveys in recent years within the Greater Wash area and nearshore coastal margins and as such, have been able to characterise the infaunal invertebrate assemblage present throughout the area. Whilst the infauna has been reasonably well documented, the epifaunal assemblage remains significantly less so, despite the fact that the epifauna probably forms the basis of major food webs throughout the inshore area. For the greater part, many previous studies have concentrated on the infaunal assemblage as a tool for monitoring, and as a result of this, the importance of the epifauna, in terms of its contribution to the invertebrate diversity, coastal fisheries and ecology of the inshore coastal margins has been under estimated. The proposed offshore development may potentially impact the infauna, epifauna and fish communities present not just within the turbine box and adjacent waters, but also along the cable route. In order to fully assess the faunal communities throughout the general area, an epifaunal survey was carried out to compliment data collected on the infauna and the fish assemblage, and contribute to the baseline studies. 20051103 20051101
