  <dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">The British Geological Survey (BGS) was commissioned by ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) to undertake a geological review of the area surrounding Gunfleet Sand in the Thames Estuary as part of a coastal process study for the proposed Gunfleet Offshore Wind Farm site. The review was accessed using the following criteria: present day physiography, sea bed sediments, geological development, solid geology, bedforms, sedimentary processes and mobility. The outcome of the study showed that within the Thames Estuary, the sea bed sediments are dominantly sandy, with larger patches of gravelly sands and sandy gravels close to the Kent coast, and a discontinuous belt of muddy sands and gravels running close to the Essex coast. The channels and banks within the Thames Estuary are covered with sediment which displays a distinctive grading. The banks are covered by predominantly fine-grained, well-sorted sand, whereas the sediments on the floor of the channels are less well-sorted, ranging from gravel to mud. On Gunfleet Sand itself, the sediments range from muddy sand on the northern flank of the bank to fine sand in the centre of the bank and on the southern flank.</dc:description>
