<dc:description xmlns:dc="http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/">As an integral part of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed offshore wind
farm development on Gunfleet Sands, offshore Essex, Enron Wind Gunfleet Ltd commissioned an
oceanographic measurement programme. Thales Geosolutions (South Africa) (Pty) Ltd, hereafter
referred to as Thales, have been contracted to deploy two current/wave meters near Gunfleet Sands
for six months.
Gunfleet Sands is located 6km to the southeast of Clacton-on-Sea, and is orientated along a
northeast – southwest axis. The instruments were deployed either side of the shallow water to
identify changes in the current and wave regimes. The equipment was originally deployed on 17th
January 2002. The specification for the contract required the proposed instrumentation to measure current speed
and direction, tidal levels, directional wave parameters and turbidity. The most appropriate instrument
that satisfied all these requirements was the Valeport 730D; the standard wave, current and tide
recorders were modified to include a turbidity sensor. Two instruments were initially deployed on 17th
January 2002. The estimated water depths at the deployment locations were 12 metres for the
southern site and 13 metres for the northern location (relative to mean sea level). This series contains the reports and datasets associated with the monitoring programme.</dc:description>
