Between 1970 and 1980 NCC contracted a survey on the littoral zone of the coast of Great Britain. Former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) now part of Natural Resources Wales (NRW) holds a series of reports prepared under this contract as well as data in Marine Recorder. The purpose of this data capture was:
- To record the distribution of habitats and the associated organisms in the littoral zone of Great Britain in order to verify existing information, fill gaps in knowledge, and ensure uniformity in the description.
- To make a photographic record of the main types of littoral habitats and the associated plant and animals.
- To develop suitable criteria for the assessment and selection of key areas in terms of their scientific and conservation value and assess the information collected by the criteria and so select key areas, and to zone the rest of the coast in relation to the key areas.
