The Bathing Water Directive 2006/7/EC (BWD) sets quality standards for bathing water. Countries in the European Union must ensure that their bathing waters meets these standards.
In Northern Ireland, 26 sites are formally identified under the BWD. Bathing water quality is monitored by DAERA Marine and Fisheries Division. The bathing season runs from June through to mid-September. Water quality is assessed on 19 occasions during the season and one occasion pre-season. Water samples are collected and analysed for the required microbiological standards. Bathing Water Quality information is updated weekly during the bathing season and displayed at the bathing waters and on the DAERA website. The annual data is forwarded to the Environment Agency (EA) at the end of each bathing season. The EA compiles all data from the UK and forwards on to the European Commission. Compliance against the BWD is calculated by DAERA Marine and Fisheries on a four year rolling data set.
