"name": "2009 Defra MB0102 2C Distribution of modelled BGS sheltered muddy gravels habitat data in the UK and the Isle of Man",
"description": "This layer shows the distribution of modelled data from BGS of sheltered muddy gravels, a Biodiversity Action Plan Habitat.\r\n Method of creation: Using the British Geological Survey DigSBS250 GIS layer, areas classified as 'Gravel sand and silt', 'Gravelly mud', 'Gravelly muddy sand', 'Muddy gravel', 'Muddy sandy gravel', 'Slightly gravelly mud' and 'Slightly gravelly sandy mud' were extracted. Using the draft wave exposure layer (resulting from MB0102 2E.6b), areas where wave exposure is classified as less than 3 (sheltered) were extracted. Using the draft maximum tidal bed shear stresses raster (resulting from MB0102 2E.3), areas where maximum tidal bed shear stresses less than 30 Nm2 were extracted. The remaining areas less than 2kms from shore were designated sheltered muddy gravels. \r\n This layer forms one of a set of data layers created for the Defra MB0102 contract. This work will support the delivery of a network of Marine Protected Areas as required to meet existing international and national obligations and commitments, including Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), a new measure to be delivered as part of the Marine and Coastal Access Bill, and equivalent measures under Scottish legislation. The availability of these data layers will also be of importance in underpinning Marine Planning (e.g. licensing) in our marine area.",
