    "description": "Two rocky-shore sites on the Isle of Cumbrae, Farland Point and White Bay, are surveyed semi-annually (March/April and August/September) in class exercises in undergraduate marine biology field courses. White Bay (a relatively sheltered shore) is located at the northern end of the island, while Farland Point (a moderately exposed shore) is located towards the south. Farland Point is subjected to prevailing SW winds. At both sites, the shore profile is measured and the abundance of selected species is assessed semi-quantitatively on an ESACFOR scale. The presence of other species is recorded in relation to major littoral zone (littoral fringe, eulittoral zone, sublittoral fringe) and microhabitat (on algae; in kelp holdfasts; under overhangs or in crevices; in rockpools; on open rock; under stones).",
