"name": "FishDAC - Scallop Survey (Scotland) 2024 - Shetland",
"description": "Scallop survey to Shetland. Survey to assess scallop stocks and collect biological information on relevant fish and shellfish species.\r\nOn completion of 0224A only two and a half days fishing were possible in the Shetland area. Sailing was initially delayed until the 25/01/24 and the decision was taken to return to the Moray firth on the evening of the 29th and the vessel departed at 0200 on the 30th January, arriving in Aberdour bay at 1900. Survey time was thereafter used to conduct seasonal comparison tows on stations usually sampled in the summer months on the East coast survey. In total 5 days were lost to due to bad weather.\r\n\r\nShetland\r\n15 scallop hauls were carried out (including one foul haul due to gear coming fast) catching a total of 3134 scallops. The scallops were all measured, aged and damage indexed. Additionally 1706 items of by-catch and 21 items of litter were caught. Two stations were sampled for heavy metals, shells were collected to provide material to assist in the of training of colleagues and two samples of Queen scallops were collected for scientists in the Isle of Man.\r\n\r\nStations located in three statistical rectangles were sampled.\r\n\r\nA visiting scientist from Shetland joined us on 29th January.",
