As part of the UK's commitment to the 1992 UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity there have been a number of coordinated initiatives to identify those habitats which may be under threat in the UK, and to establish plans to reduce those threats and thereby maintain biodiversity. The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) is now one of the main focuses of that work. It provides detailed proposals for a number of species, species groups and habitats requiring urgent conservation action. In addition to this the Habitats Directive (1992) requires the establishment of a European network of important high-quality conservation sites, Special Areas of Conservation (SACs). The Habitats Directive identifies Reefs as a major category of habitats that should be considered for inclusion in SACs. Tidal rapids not only forms part of the reef environments classification but is also highlighted as an important site under the UKBAP habitats list. Tidal rapids is used to describe a broad range of high energy environments including deep tidal streams and tide-swept habitats. JNCC’s Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) defined rapids as ‘strong tidal streams resulting from a constriction in the coastline at the entrance to, or within the length of, an enclosed body of water such as a sea loch. Depth is usually shallower than five metres. The purpose of this data capture was to assess the features in North West Anglesey to help inform and define conservation objective and decisions regarding their protection and management.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Marine biological surveys of seabed habitats and communities in four areas exposed to strong tidal currents around southwest and northwest Wales, were made in summer 2002 and summer 2003. Survey methods were based on the standard Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNCR) techniques using in-situ identification of conspicuous species and description of habitat and community characteristics. The survey sites were chosen to represent the range of tide-swept rocky habitats present in each area; particularly concentrating on sites for where there was no (or very limited) previous survey data. Recent multi-beam survey images aided selection of the sites in the Daugleddau Estuary, Milford Haven and West Pembrokeshire coast. Subtidal and intertidal components of the fie ldwork were carried out separately. Further details of these standard methodologies are given in MNCR Rational and Methods. Each site survey was recorded immediately on standard MNCR recording forms. Confidence in this dataset is high. Previous surveys have been undertaken in this area, by various parties and include some detail of the 'Tidal Rapids' and reef systems. These include surveys carried out by JNCC, some Seasearch surveys and a handful of other smaller surveys. |
