This spatial dataset contains the digital boundaries of biosphere reserves in Wales. The Biosphere Reserve is an international designation made by UNESCO based on nominations made by more than 110 countries. These sites are chosen to conserve examples of areas which are characteristic of the world's natural regions. They must also be areas where people are important components of everyday life. The biosphere is rapidly changing under the influence of human activity, so meeting their needs whilst conserving the area's natural processes and wildlife is of the utmost importance.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 1744 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Biosphere Reserves |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Gwarchodfeydd Biosffer, Sites (Biosphere), Biosphere.LYR |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 4f4c4942-4343-5764-6473-303938373431 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 98741 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 1977-01-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2010-02-09 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The original boundary was a paper map but later became digital data. The outer edge of the biosphere boundary is made of Community Council boundaries to landward and the seaward edge is snapped to the -10 metre bathymetric contour. The inner two zones follow firstly Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSI) boundaries (Buffer Zone) and then the Special Areas of Conservation (SAC) boundaries (Core Zone). The largest area is called the Transition Zone. This latest modification to the original site boundary was produced digitally. The data has been checked by Natural Resources Wales' staff. |
