This spatial dataset contains digital boundaries of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in Wales. The EC Habitats and Species Directive came into effect in 1992 with the aim of maintaining a rich variety of wildlife by protecting vulnerable habitats, and the plants and animals they support. The Habitat Directive together with the 1979 Birds Directive will lead to the establishment of a series of sites throughout Europe that will be known as 'Natura 2000'. This represents the cream of European sites and will ensure their survival for future generations. SACs have been designated over a number of years, from 1993 to the present day, and are on-going. These sites have been mapped on paper since the mid 1990s and then there was a major review from 2000 with the 'SAC Mode ration Project' when the data was captured digitally for the first time.

Internal code | Internally assigned metadata identifier | 1778 |
Title | The title is used to provide a brief and precise description of the dataset such as 'Date', 'Originating organisation/programme', 'Location' and 'Type of survey'. All acronyms and abbreviations should be reproduced in full. | Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) |
Alternative title | The purpose of alternative title is to record any additional names by which the dataset may be known. | Ardaloedd Cadwraeth Arbennig (ACA), Sites (SAC), Special Areas Conservation.LYR, Candidate Special Areas of Conservation (cSAC) |
File Identifier | The File Identifier is a code, preferably a GUID, that is globally unique and remains with the same metadata record even if the record is edited or transferred between portals or tools. | 4f4c4942-4343-5764-6473-303938373636 |
Resource Identifier | This is the code assigned by the data owner. | 98766 |
Resource type | The resource type will likely be a dataset but could also be a series (collection of datasets with a common specification) or a service. | dataset |
Start date | This describes the date the resource starts. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2000-01-01 |
End date | This describes the date the resource ends. This may only be the year if month and day are not known | 2019-02-22 |
Spatial resolution | This describes the spatial resolution of the dataset or the spatial limitations of the service. | inapplicable |
Frequency of updates | This describes the frequency with which the resource is modified or updated i.e. a monitoring programme that samples once per year has a frequency that is described as 'annually'. | asNeeded |
Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | This spatial dataset contains digital boundaries of Special Areas of Conservation (SACs) in Wales. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | In 2005 all SACs were re-designated/designated and the number of sites doubled in Wales, so this entire dataset originated as digital data to OS Landline. In 2008 the whole dataset was updated to OS MasterMap (mostly to CCW 2006 OS update). If any underpinning Sites of Scientific Interest (SSSIs) are re-notified the overlying SAC designation will likewise be put to the latest release by NRW of OS MasterMap. With the coming of GIS and its use in government departments and commercial companies mobilising the data in this way, advances the protection of these sites and the efficiency of decision making. This data has been checked by NRW staff. However please refer to the designation map as the legal definitive boundary. Large SACs that have been printed on a smal ler scale map than OS Landline, please refer to OS MasterMap edition at time of transposition to view the definitive boundary. |
Additional information | This describes relevant references to the data e.g. reports, articles, websites plus other useful information not captured elsewhere. | Please refer to EC Habitats and Species Directive 1992 for reasons for capture of original designation. Before Special Areas of Conservation or fully designated they go through a stage of being a cSAC or candidate Special Area of Conservation, these reside in a separate layer. In addition to the NRW has also created a subset of this dataset just showing those which are Marine Special Areas of Conservation, this is available on the marine planning portal. |
