Sabellaria alveolata reefs are formed by the honeycomb worm Sabellaria alveolata, a polychaete which constructs tubes in tightly packed masses with a distinctive honeycomb-like appearance. These reefs can be up to 30 or even 50 cm thick and take the form of hummocks, sheets or more massive formations. Reefs are mainly found on the bottom third of the shore, but may reach mean high water of neap tides and extend into the shallow subtidal in places. This is a spatial dataset made up of known locations of the Sabellaria alveolata Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) habitats across Wales. The data are derived from the Countryside Council for Wales' (CCWs) intertidal Phase 1 survey, data held by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) from the Marine Nature Conservation Review (MNC R) project and from ad-hoc records by individuals. The aim of this data capture digitally is to represent the distribution of the BAP habitat across wales.
