Muddy gravels consist of shores of mixed sediments ranging from muds with gravel and sand components to mixed sediments with pebbles, gravels, sands and mud in even proportions. Mixed sediments which are predominantly muddy tend to support infauna similar to mud and sandy mud shores. Although sheltered muddy gravel habitats occur principally in estuaries, rias and sea lochs in areas protected from wave action and strong tidal streams, the environmental conditions of the Menai Strait are unusual, in that the water is relatively turbid and although the area is largely sheltered from wave action it experiences extremely strong tidal currents, reaching up to 8 knots in places during spring tides. The muddy gravel LMX.Psyllid biotope has been mapped along the west side of the Menai Strai ts, with the mixed sediment shores between Beaumaris and Lleiniog being highly productive, rich in animal and plant species. The muddy gravel LMX.Psyllid contains an unusually high number of syllid polychaetes and form a nationally important biotope, uncommon within the UK. The aim of this data capture was to identify the boundary of muddy gravel and muddy gravel with canopy of tideswept Fucus serratus. - To determine what exactly constitutes the boundary of muddy gravel - To measure the extent of the muddy gravel biotope - To determine a physical damage index for muddy gravels - To take samples at old and recently impacted areas of muddy gravel. - To characterise the infaunal community and identify the degree and type of change using previous data.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Marine mud and muddy gravel habitats had previously been sampled by Barnes (2003) and CCW in August 2002. The survey was undertaken two hours either side of low water on a good spring tide with transects walked from high to low water, perpendicular to the shore along a bearing. At each sample point (sample station) GPS readings were noted. Information recorded included photograph of sediment surface, sediment type, species found on surface, % cover of fucoids, photograph of profile dug in sediment, species found in profile and infauna detectable by sieving. Sample points were spaced at 25m intervals and sufficient regular transects were sampled to ensure that extent and distribution were described. Survey dates- 02/08/04-03/08/04, historic data was also used from 2002. |
