This is a spatial dataset comprising of data for the mean high water mark around the coast of Wales divided into line lengths reflecting the phase 1 survey sites. Information provided includes site ID, site name, name of Special Area of Conservation (SAC) the site is part of, selection unit and length. The intertidal habitat mapping began in 1996 and was completed in 2005. All work has been undertaken by the former Countryside Council for Wales (CCW's) in house intertidal survey team. Surveys were undertaken to provide an assessment of sites as possible Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI's) and as a basis for developing sensitivity mapping. They are also used in the production and evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA's) and as an integrated infor mation resource for local authorities' structure and development plans on the coast and for the consideration of planning applications.
