There were numerous aims of this data capture. - To establish the presence and extent of Pectenogammarus planicrurus at two sites where it had previously been found. - To establish whether the amphipod was restricted to a localised habitat at the sites or whether it was present along the entire length of the shoreline, identify and map its presence and extent along the surf zone, estimate its abundance. - To take representative core samples for enumeration of P. planicrurus and Particle Size Analysis across the full extent of the biotope. The results of a Pectenogammarus planicrurus monitoring programme carried out at two sites- Pwllheli, Pen Llyn a'r Sarnau Special Area of Conservation (SACs) and Gilfach yr Halen, Cardigan Bay Special Area of Conservation (SACs). P. planicrurus had previously been found at these sites during Phase 1 surveys undertaken by Countryside Council for Wales (CCW) so the data collected contributed to an investigation into their continuing existence. P. planicrurus is the only amphipod which is a permanent resident of shingle beaches and is found in the intertidal zone of clean shingle beaches, often in the lee of obstacles such as rocky outcrops and groynes.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Pwllheli: Survey was undertaken by working two hours either side of low water with part of the survey on foot and part using a quad bike (distribution of the amphipod was more extensive than previously thought so use of a quad bike enabled sampling across the full extent of the beach within a single tidal window). Initial surveying aimed to establish the presence/absence of the species throughout the site and involved randomly chosen sample stations along the surf line (position of each station recorded using dGPS). At each station a shallow trough was dug and the number of P. planicrurus estimated using MNCR SACFOR abundance scales adapted for crustacea. Small amount of sediment was sieved as a secondary check if P. planicrurus not immediately visible. Sediment particle size and infaunal samples were taken away for analysis. Gilfach Yr Halen: Survey was undertaken on foot working two hours either side of low water. Sampling stations were located approx every 10m along edge of the surf zone (position of each station recorded using dGPS). Sediment type was noted at each station and where possible a shallow trough was dug to enumerate any P. planicrurus identified. When digging a trough was not possible (on mixed hard substrata) the under cobble/boulder, and fucoid habitats were examined. |
