Temperature loggers have been placed at sites across Special Areas of Conservations (SACs) in Wales to measure the bottom sea temperature. The data is collected continuously but is processed to give the daily mean temperature as well as yearly averages. This data is collected as part of the Across Wales Diving Monitoring Survey. Additional sea temperature recordings are taken at Skomer Marine Conservation Zone but these are covered in a separate metadata entry. Water temperature is also recorded in saline lagoons at Cemlyn and Pickleridge. The data are captured as part of the Across-Wales Diving Survey, designed to gather information on Reef features across the Marine SACs in Wales. Gathering physical data such as temperature, provides context and background information for the con dition assessment of each of the reef features monitored. For example, biogenic reefs and many of the species that occur around the reefs in Wales may be sensitive to fluctuations in temperature. The data collected may provide supporting evidence for any recorded changes in species composition on sites, particularly where species are known to be at the edge of their biogeographical range. All information about the sites is in kept the Temperature loggers site location document.

Abstract | The abstract provides a clear and brief statement of the content of the resource. | Temperature loggers have been placed at sites across Special Areas of Conservations (SACs) in Wales to measure the bottom sea temperature. Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The temperature loggers are part of a wider network of loggers in Wales that include Skomer MNR and the Saline Lagoons. All data will also be made available through British Oceanographic Data Centre. All the temperature data is recorded by either Vemco Minilogs, Tiny Talk Temperature or Starr Oddi Salinity and Temperature loggers. As each logger is deployed a record is kept of which site it has been deployed to and how often the logger has been reused. No logger is deployed more than a maximum of 5 times. Loggers are recovered every year (usually in May) but this is dependant on weather conditions and diver availability. All loggers are placed at a fixed location on the seabed. These are marked by bolts, pitons or attached to Monitoring Station Markers ( e.g. Road Pins 'Pyramid'). The logger records the Date, Time (hh/mm/ss) and Temperature (oC) at 3 hour intervals. For each logger, metadata is recorded, including the serial number of the logger and the date and times the logger was deployed and recovered. Temperature Loggers are placed at the following Locations in Wales: - North Llyn Modiolus (Pyramid) Reef Site 1 (monitoring station marker) - Pen Cristen, Bardsey Island (piton) (from 2000) - St Tudwels (East) ('Road Pin' pyramid) (from 2002) - Sarn Badrig Pyramid (monitoring station marker) - Ynys Moelfre (eye bolt) - Beggars Reach, Milford Haven (eye bolt) (from 2007) - 'Warrior', Milford Haven (eye bolt) - Thorn Island, Milford Haven (eye bolt) - Chapel Rock, Milford Haven (eye bolt) - Holyhead Marina (from 2009) - North Llyn (From 2003) - Sarn Badrig (From 2006) |
Additional information | This describes relevant references to the data e.g. reports, articles, websites plus other useful information not captured elsewhere. | Confidence in this data is high. All recordings are automated and all loggers are pre-calibrated. Gaps do occur within some of the time series datasets where the loggers have been lost or damaged. |
