The Dee, Traeth Lafan and Burry Inlet are designated Special Protection Areas (SPAs) for nationally and internationally important populations of wintering wildfowl and waders. To set conservation objections and assess the sites for Favourable Conservation Status, information is required on numbers of birds using the sites and the food supplies they require to survive the winter and attain adequate body condition for Spring Migration This is phase 2 of a project that was started in 2002-03 and uses existing and new data to parameterise an individual behaviour-based model to answer key questions relating to target setting, condition monitoring and management of each of the three sites. The purpose of this data capture was to inform the setting of conservation objectives for the SPAs and assess the favourable conservation status of bird populations.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | An individual behaviour-based model (IBM) is used to predict the food requirements of a bird population. The model requires information on bird foraging behaviour together with site-specific data on bird numbers, and the size and distribution of cockle and mussel stocks. The following datasets were collated for the model 1. Ash Free Dry Mass analysis data files (excel spreadsheets) 2. Cockle and mussel survey data (excel spreadsheets) 3. Average daily temperatures (text files) Information on cockle and mussel stocks was collected by CCW for the 3 sites for 2003 and 2004 under a separate project. This builds on a scoping study (phase 1) that was undertaken in 2002-2003 that examined existing data to determine what additional data were required for the model and to determine the best methods for stock assessment. Data from Phase 1 is archived as project no 158 (Media 103). |
