This dataset contains analysis data in the form of excel spreadsheets (survey dates, contacts, recreational popular areas, details of sea defences etc) and MapInfo tables (biotope distribution- including rare, scarce, nationally important and specialised biotopes, biotope richness, mapping of northern and southern species, non native species, LBAP areas, bait digging and boulder turning locations, angling, man made substrata, intertidal designated sites etc). It also contains many images taken during surveying which are stored as JPEGs. These are made up of the results of a 10 year survey of the intertidal zone of Wales including detailed information on a wide variety of features and activities e.g. the distribution of habitats and species, non-native species, man-made substrata, bai t collection. It provides comprehensive baseline data for monitoring change or for the identification of locations sensitive to certain anthropogenic impacts - a critical capacity in the context of climate change. The data also provides information to support a notification programme for intertidal Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), thereby providing a series of intertidal designated sites across Wales. It also underpins the selection of the internationally important Special Area of Conservation (SAC) site series. Intertidal mapped data provides an integrated information resource for Local Authority structure and development plans on the coast and for the consideration of planning applications. The maps give important regional information about habitat and biotope distribution . They are used in the production and evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessments, assessment of sites as possible Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), as a basis for the development of sensitivity mapping, and as a baseline for developing monitoring of intertidal features in marine Special Areas of Conservation (SAC). Sites are mapped once and therefore are a 'snapshot' in time.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey methodology is based on 'Handbook for Marine Intertidal Phase 1 Biotope Mapping Survey'. Biotopes are based on the JNCC report `Marine Nature Conservation Review: marine biotope classification for Britain and Ireland. Volumes 1 and 2. Version 97.06'. Working at a scale of 1:5,000, field survey is based on using a combination of aerial photographs and Ordnance Survey (OS) maps as a template on to which the substratum and biotopes (habitat and associated biological community) are drawn. Features and other information that are not map-able are described in target notes, a site description provides general information on the whole site and further information on biotopes and species are recorded on the survey form. Each survey site is validat ed by two surveyors who visited the site. A 3 stage validation process is carried out. First validation process includes checking that all survey visit details are correct, all target note information is correct and transferred to the database in the correct fields, all designations are described, all biotopes species lists are transferred to the database and included for the site, all photographs are sequentially labelled. Second validation ensures all spellings and grammar are correct. Third validation process ensures that spatial digital data matches the original paper map and database entries. This includes automating data entry for codes, cross-referencing record id numbers, biotopes, target notes and grid references. Automated checks are carried out on spatial datasets in MapInfo. |
