In March 1996 the Sea Empress Environmental Evaluation Committee (SEEEC) was set up by the government to assess the impact of the Sea Empress oil spill on the environment. This contract was issued as part of the SEEEC monitoring programme designed to evaluate the impact of oil from the Sea Empress on local marine life. Data collected in order to ascertain whether Paludinella littorina still lived at its known sites at Broad Haven and on Caldey Island after the Sea Empress oil spill and to obtain more information on the extent and density of the populations. The objectives were to: 1. Ascertain whether Paludinella littorina is still living at its known sites at Broad Haven and on Caldey Island and to obtain more information on the extent and density of the populations. 2. Attempt an assessment of the impact of oil damage, if any and subsequent recovery, to habitats at known Paludinella littorina sites. 3. Locate and investigate other sites for Paludinella littorina on Caldey Island. 4. Evaluate methods for monitoring and recommend a protocol for future monitoring work.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | Survey work for the present contract was focused at the two known Paludinella localities: Broad Haven near Bosherston, and Caldey Island. At Broad Haven this involved close examination of a north-west facing wall within a cave where snails had been seen on the previous survey. Additional surfaces further inside the cave and towards the exterior walls and entrance were also searched. On Caldey Island two sites investigated in 1994 were revisited and additional sites of potential habitat on the island were examined. During fieldwork photographs were taken of sites including overall views and more focused pictures of habitat. It was not necessary to remove any animals or algae from the field for laboratory investigation. Increased monitoring efforts and impact assessment following the Sea Empress oil spill. This dataset contributed to the Pembrokeshire Marine Species Atlas, see separate metadata entry. The species formed the basis of survey work carried out in 1994 to assess the population at its known Welsh site at Broad Haven. |
