The large breeding colonies of grey seals in northern Britain have been censused annually in recent years by the Sea Mammal Research Unit, but the relatively small population in Wales had not been the subject of a population estimate since 1974 and there had never been a comprehensive census of all mainland and island sites sustained through a pupping season. The purpose of this data capture was to locate and document all grey seal breeding sites during the main pupping season from September to December 1991 and to estimate pup production at these sites. To estimate the total number of cows in the West Wales population, identify 'areas' where seals are subject to disturbance by man and assess the quality of the breeding haul-out environment.

Lineage | Lineage includes the background information, history of the sources of data, data quality statements and methods. | The study area comprising the Dyfed coast and offshore islands between Aberystwyth and Caldey Island was divided into 11 sections designated by the letters A to K, at locations with road access to slipways from which the survey vessel could be launched. In each section the coast was surveyed by land and sea between September 1991 and the onset of the 1992 pupping season and all locations considered to be possible grey seal pupping sites were recorded on maps and investigated by landing on the site from the sea. The criteria used for inclusion in the list of potential pupping sites were: - The presence of a beach above the level of high-water, - Access for seals from the sea, and - Relatively low human disturbance. |
