Borden Chemicals (formerly B.P. Chemicals) is a large chemical works located to the east of Barry, south Wales. Effluent is released into the Bristol Channel via a long sea outfall which discharges approximately 1 km offshore at 51degrees 23.41 N 03degrees 14.49 W. This replaced an old outfall in 1993 that discharged into the intertidal zone to the east of Barry docks at 51degrees 23.67 N 03degrees 14.88 W. The effluent is a complex mix of mostly organic compounds including phenol, toluene, 1,2-dichloroethane, methanol, acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride. However, the discharge generally meet the levels set by their consent for materials discharged into the waters of the Bristol Channel. This dataset contains the results of a survey of the benthic environment in the vicinity of the Bo rden Chemicals long sea outfall, east of Barry in the Bristol Channel. The purpose of this data capture was to collect data to conduct biological analysis as well as sediment samples and physico-chemical analyses to provide information for an Environmental Impact Assessment. As of the 1st April 2013, Natural Resources Wales has taken over the functions currently carried out by the Countryside Council for Wales, Environment Agency Wales and Forestry Commission Wales.
